黃偉文 wrote Juno a song about the love that will not leave the chest. Common English title: Gnawing. He has a new girl. He still wants the old one to come meet her. That is the sickness, and he knows it.

Why it had to wait ten years

Proto, 2004-04-27. 詞 黃偉文. 曲 伍樂城. Charted quietly (新城 9, TVB 5). A year later it sat on the compilation Walking Underneath (2005-12-06). Wikipedia lists it among Juno’s representative works. In 2004 it was just another 吳日言-on-the-stairs karaoke wound. In 2015 it became chapter one.

Juno has said the sequel needed the gap. If 《耿耿於懷》 had been followed immediately by 《念念不忘》, it would not have earned the name. 無經歷過一段時間點稱得上念念不忘. 東方日報, 2015-09-25: he called the three songs the 癡戀三部曲 for the 十年男孩 — then 《羅生門》 with 謝安琪, which takes the girl’s side and wrecks the boy’s one-way memory.

The fuse for the sequel was a night he sang this at Concert YY 黃偉文作品展. Wyman’s pitch, later retold: ten years on, same boy, 伍樂城 again. Juno went away to make films. When he came back he wanted six songs to take the boy apart. 《念念不忘》 waited a year in the drawer before 2015. Treat that as the room the old song walked into, not a court finding about anyone’s real ex.

The MV is the 2004 VCD clip. 女主角 吳日言. Shot on 中環樓梯街, one long take, 八十幾個 take. Juno, promoting 《念念不忘》 in 2015: the stairs were exhausting, 可一不可再, and the old MV 故事感不強 — which is why he did not simply walk her back up the same steps.

What the images are doing

• 少女漫畫. The first fact he still has about her. Not a personality. A product. Ten years later 《念念不忘》 will keep sending Hello Kitty into a memory she may never have owned.
• 剛識到的她. He has a new girl and the first date he can invent is introducing her to the ex. 我想聽你意見. 這算是病吧. He writes the diagnosis into the verse so nobody has to pretend this is healthy.
• 練習太耐. Love as a skill that atrophies. 感覺都追不回來. He is not saying the new girl is worse. He is saying the muscle is gone.
• 生銹的鎖 / 鑰匙折斷 / 舊患所在. Loneliness sat too long. The lock rusted. The key snapped in the old wound and stayed there. 舊患 is an old injury, not a nostalgic house. You cannot open what broke inside the injury.
• 懷內. The title’s 懷, made literal: the chest is packed with love for you, so there is no room left to 戀愛 anyone else. Last chorus upgrades the fear: 若懷內放滿 — if it is full — 害怕一直也再沒法戀愛.
• 從前的家 / 落幕 / 揭起. Walking past the old building is already too much. If the past has not dropped the curtain, peeling it up again might be 有害. He asks the question and then does it anyway.
• 斷箭 / 體內. The past as a broken arrow that did not exit. 還剩下在體內. You can snap the shaft. The head stays.

The joke of the whole machine is that he wants her opinion on the new relationship. The lock, the key, the arrow: none of those need a consultant. He does.

Language

• 嗎 on 還好嗎 / 漫畫嗎 / 對象嗎 / 有害嗎 is maa3, not maa1 媽. Written question particle.
• 這 on 這算是病吧 is ze2. Tokenizer offered ze5.
• 少女 is siu2 neoi5. 少 as young is siu2; siu3 is few. Mix them and she becomes a shortage, not a shoujo reader.
• 看 here is hon1 (read / watch). Spoken you would reach for 睇.
• 識到 is sik1 dou3 — managed to get to know. 到 as result complement is dou3, not dou2 倒.
• 太耐（taai3 noi6）. Cantonese too long, not Mandarin 太久. Keep 耐. The rust needs duration, not “patience.”
• 生銹（saang1 sau3）. Licensed lyrics keep 銹. Same rust either way.
• 斷箭 is dyun6 zin3 (broken). Tokenizer offered tyun5, the “decide / judge” reading. The arrow snapped. It did not hold a verdict.
• 戀上 is lyun2 soeng5. 上 as the result complement onto, not soeng6 “above.”
• 剩 in 剩下 is zing6. The shard left in the body.
