Why they cannot be 老友

Life Continues, 2006. 詞 黃偉文. 曲 Eric Kwok 郭偉亮. Eric and 楊千嬅 share a birthday. Eason was her close friend in the industry. The story that went around: Wyman wrote the distance between himself and Miriam, asked those two to make the record, and Eric called her the day it was done — you have to listen. Neither of them published a full confession. Treat that as the room the song walked into, not a court finding.

Years later Wyman’s works concert had her on stage. After she left, this melody came in. He also wrote 最好的債 as the other side of the ledger: 摯友, like lovers, has no win or lose.

The last line is the wound he is willing to keep. 總好於那日我沒有沒有遇過某某. Better to have been ruined by this friend than never to have met them.

What the images are doing

• 最佳損友. 損友 is the friend who is bad for you. 最佳 is the joke and the bruise. Not “best friend.” The best of the ones who wreck you.
• 營救 / 批鬥. Rescue, then struggle-session. Same person, both jobs. 批鬥 is Cultural Revolution vocabulary sitting in a karaoke ballad.
• 促膝把酒 傾通宵. Knee to knee, wine, talk until morning. The archive of the friendship. 傾 is chat (king1), not pour.
• 踏入過我宇宙 / 裂口. They were inside the private universe. Then a crack. 命運 decides you don’t 聚頭 again. The past stays 厚.
• 敵友. Enemy-friend, the title’s other spelling. 不知你是我敵友. The last chorus switches to 不知你又有沒有 掛念這舊友 — maybe they miss you too. Maybe you already thought it through.
• 葡萄成熟透. Wait until the grapes are fully ripe, then drink again. A reunion that fate does not schedule. 路口, 隊友: the junction where you get assigned to other people.
• 眼淚背著流. Cry with your back turned — same physics as 用背脊唱情歌. 嚴重似情侶講分手: the breakup template borrowed from lovers, used on a friend.
• 某某. No name. Yesterday’s closest person is next year’s stranger. The blank is the point.

Language

• 當 here is dong3 (treat as), not dong1. 當天 in 生死之交當天 stays dong1 (that day).
• 損友（syun2 jau5）. Keep 損. It is damage, not 遜.
• 批鬥（pai1 dau3） is struggle / denunciation, not “criticise in a meeting.”
• 藉口 is zik6 hau2. 什麼 stays sam6 mo1 (written). Spoken you would reach for 乜.
• 這 on 這舊友 is ze2. Tokenizer offered ze5.
• 卻沒人像你 is 沒 + 人 + 像, not the word 人像 (portrait).
• 有沒有 is the question do you / did you. The last verse stacks 沒有沒有遇過 — never, never met.
